How We Use AI Tools to Support Quality Care
By Autumn Richardson, LCSW — Clinical Director
AI doesn't provide your therapy—your therapist does. Here's how we use technology to help our clinicians deliver even better care.
As a therapy practice committed to innovation and transparency, we want to share how we're thoughtfully integrating AI-assisted tools into our clinical workflow. We understand that the words "artificial intelligence" can feel unfamiliar or even concerning in the context of mental health care—so we want to be upfront about what these tools do, what they don't do, and why we believe they ultimately benefit you.
The most important thing to know is this: AI does not provide your therapy. Your therapist—a licensed, trained clinician—is the one guiding your treatment, building the therapeutic relationship, and making all clinical decisions. AI is simply a behind-the-scenes tool that helps your therapist work more efficiently and effectively.
It's also important to know that the use of AI-assisted tools is 100% elective. Not every clinician in our practice uses them, and their use is always guided by what best serves the client's preferences and treatment needs. If a client prefers that AI tools not be used in any aspect of their care, we are happy to honor that request—no questions asked.
"Think of it like a spell-check for clinical notes—it helps with structure and accuracy, but the clinician is always the author of your care."
What AI Helps Our Therapists Do
We use AI-assisted tools in two key areas of clinical practice—neither of which involves delivering therapy directly to clients.
Drafting Clinically Sound Notes
After each session, therapists are required to complete clinical documentation—progress notes that capture what was discussed, what interventions were used, and how treatment is progressing. AI tools help draft these notes more efficiently, allowing your therapist to spend less time on paperwork and more time focused on you. Every note is reviewed, edited, and finalized by the clinician to ensure accuracy and clinical integrity.
Supporting Evidence-Based Practice
AI tools can help therapists ensure that the interventions they document align with evidence-based practices—the gold standard in mental health treatment. This means your therapist has an additional layer of support in verifying that they are using well-researched, proven approaches in your care, which also helps maintain quality assurance and billing compliance.
What AI Does Not Do
We want to be equally clear about the boundaries of how AI is used in our practice. AI tools are never involved in the following:
AI does not conduct therapy sessions
Your sessions are always led by a licensed therapist or a supervised clinical trainee. AI is never present in the room—virtual or otherwise—during your appointment.
AI does not make clinical decisions
Diagnosis, treatment planning, and all clinical judgment calls are made by your therapist. AI does not assess, evaluate, or recommend treatment for any client.
AI does not replace the therapeutic relationship
The trust, empathy, and connection you build with your therapist is the foundation of effective care. No technology can replicate that—and we would never try to substitute it.
How This Benefits You
When therapists spend less time on administrative tasks like documentation, the benefits ripple through to the quality of care you receive:
More Present Therapists
With documentation support, your therapist can be more fully present and engaged during sessions rather than mentally tracking note-taking details.
Reduced Burnout
Administrative burden is one of the leading causes of clinician burnout. AI-assisted documentation helps our therapists sustain their energy and passion for the work.
Higher Quality Notes
Thorough, well-structured clinical notes support continuity of care—especially if you ever transition between providers or need records for coordinated care.
Billing Accuracy
By helping ensure documentation reflects evidence-based interventions, AI tools support accurate billing and reduce the likelihood of insurance claim issues.
Privacy & Security
HIPAA Compliance
Any AI tools we use are vetted for HIPAA compliance and data security. Your protected health information is handled with the same care and confidentiality standards that apply to all aspects of your treatment.
Your Data Is Protected
We do not use AI tools that store, share, or learn from your personal information. Our commitment to your privacy is unwavering, regardless of the technologies we adopt.
Our Commitment to Thoughtful Innovation
At Innovative Care, our name reflects our philosophy: we're always looking for ways to improve the quality of care we provide, while keeping the human connection at the center of everything we do. Using AI to support clinical documentation is one way we're doing that—thoughtfully, ethically, and transparently.
If you have any questions about how we use AI tools or want to learn more about our approach, we encourage you to ask your therapist. We believe in open communication and want you to feel fully informed and comfortable with every aspect of your care.
